A Millennials Guide To Halloween Costumes // Witch Edition

For the second Millennial’s Guide this year, I wanted to take inspiration from a recent event I attended and create this witches inspired guide. A few weeks ago, I went to Lucy Jane Wood’s Birmingham book event for Rewitched and Uncharmed with a friend. It was such a fantastic evening and what stood out most was the shared love in the room for all things witch. That spark of nostalgia inspired this guide.

Elphaba from Wicked

A Wicked-inspired Elphaba costume collage showing items to recreate her Shiz University look. Includes a navy blazer, blue roll-neck top, blue midi skirt, brown lace-up boots, blue beanie hat, round glasses, dark braided wig, and green face paint. Centre image shows Elphaba on stage in her blue uniform holding a brown suitcase.

When it comes to Wicked-inspired looks, I wanted to highlight Elphaba’s Shiz University outfit. But, the version from the West End and Broadway production.

With Wicked having such a big moment right now, it’s no surprise that people are leaning towards recreating the show’s iconic characters. Some will go all out with Glinda’s pink ensembles or the classic witch hat and black cape combo for Elphaba, but I’ve always loved her school uniform look. It’s understated, recognisable, and surprisingly easy to pull together.

In the stage production, Elphaba’s uniform consists of a plain blue coat or blazer, a blue roll-neck jumper, a blue skirt, and brown boots. She carries a brown suitcase too, but I left that out because, let’s be honest, it’s not the most practical accessory for a party. Add a blue hat, sunglasses, and braid your hair to the side, or use a wig if you need to, and the outfit instantly comes together.

What really makes this costume stand out, of course, is Elphaba’s signature green skin. I love this version of the look because the outfit covers most of your body. The roll neck, long sleeves, and long skirt with boots means you only need to paint your face, neck, and hands. (If you have a shorter skirt, you can add black tights).

It’s easier to apply, quicker to remove, and still completely captures her essence. The only tweak I’ve made is swapping the stage glasses for the film’s round frames. They’re easy to find online, adds a nice nod to the movie, and still feel perfectly at home in Elphaba’s world.

Sabrina from Sabrina The Teenage Witch

A costume collage inspired by Sabrina the Teenage Witch featuring two outfit ideas. The first includes a black pinafore dress, coloured long-sleeve top, black tights, and chunky black loafers for her 90s everyday look. The second is a classic witch costume with a long black dress, pointy hat, and heels. Centre images show Sabrina in her school outfit and another photo of her dressed as a witch with her black cat Salem.

For this look, we’re heading straight to my 90s with Sabrina the Teenage Witch. This show was my childhood. I adored everything about it. The cast, the humour, Salem’s sarcasm, and of course, all the witchy fun. I even collected the Sabrina magazines that came with makeup bits! When I think of 90s witches, Sabrina is always the first that comes to mind.

When it comes to Halloween, recreating a “quintessential Sabrina” look can be tricky, so I’ve put together two options. The first is her classic everyday style: a black pinafore dress, tights, and clunky 90s shoes. Underneath, you can pick a coloured top. In the series she wore purple, white, and yellow with versions of this outfit. It’s simple, nostalgic, and instantly recognisable to anyone who grew up watching the show.

The second look is a more traditional witch outfit. I went for a black dress (many I found were labelled as “vampire” or “gothic” styles), focusing on one with simple detailing and flared sleeves. Add a classic witch hat with a buckle, and it gives that perfect Wiccan-inspired 90s vibe.

What I love about these two outfits is how versatile they are. You could swap the witch dress for a cape, to wear both. Mix and match the accessories, or reuse the pieces for other costumes. Both looks are wearable and affordable. They remind me that Halloween costumes doesn’t always have to be about what’s trending. It’s about celebrating the characters that made us fall in love with magic in the first place.

Eva Ernst / The Grand High Witch from The Witches

A costume collage inspired by Anjelica Huston’s character the Grand High Witch from the 1990 film The Witches. Includes a black fitted dress, purple-lined cape, sheer black tights, black heels, short black bob wig, and long black gloves. Centre image shows the Grand High Witch in her elegant black dress raising her hand dramatically on stage.

For the final look, we’re sticking with the 90s with The Witches. Starring the incredible Anjelica Huston, who is quite literally Halloween personified. You might recognise her as Morticia Addams from The Addams Family, but I was first introduced to her as the Grand High Witch.

This look is perfect whether you’re heading to a Halloween party or want something more subtle for the office. It’s timeless, easy to recreate, and full of those vintage touches that make it feel authentic. Most of the pieces I’ve used are easy to find online and the dress itself is from Pretty Kitty Fashion. An amazing vintage retailer I’d highly recommend if you’re looking for something you can re-wear.

For this version of the Grand High Witch, I wanted to focus on her glamorous, non-witch disguise. (If you haven’t seen the film, slight spoiler ahead!). Beneath the glamour, she removes her face like a mask to reveal the more traditional witchy features. The hooked nose, boils, and wrinkles. But for this look, I wanted to keep it simple, elegant, and distinctly 90s. The silhouette, makeup, and hair all reflect that era’s refined yet dramatic style. Which was a common theme across witchy TV shows and films at the time. It felt like the perfect way to close out this guide.

And that wraps up A Millennial’s Guide to Halloween Costumes: Witch Edition! This one was so full of nostalgia for me, and I really enjoyed putting together costume ideas that were a little more simple and wearable. It’s a nice change from the creepier, more dramatic makeup looks I can feature in the Creator Edition series.

Who would you say was the most popular witch character?

As always, thanks for reading…
