Rare Beauty True To Myself Foundation // The August Review

We’re heading into makeup, and I’ve never been steered wrong by Rare Beauty, so when I was looking for a new foundation, picking up the True to Myself Natural Matte Longwear Foundation felt like a pretty safe bet.

This foundation promises a natural matte finish with buildable medium-to-full coverage, and with 48 shades. But as we all know, a foundation can make all the claims it likes; what really matters is how it actually performs on your skin.

A cylindrical bottle of Rare Beauty foundation sitting centered against a neutral off-white background. The bottle features a frosted glass base revealing a light tan liquid foundation inside, with the brand name "Rare Beauty" printed vertically in gold font. It is topped with a smooth, light beige pump cap featuring a small dispenser opening on the front.

The brand describes the product as:

Formulated with True Comfort ComplexTM, this foundation contains sodium hyaluronate, ginger root and algae extract, which work to strengthen the skin barrier and keep the skin moisturised for up to eight hours. It also contains advanced film formers that allow it to act as a primer, while finely milled powders enable it to set itself.

Cons:

  • None!

The Verdict:

I think I’ve found another Rare Beauty winner. I picked this foundation up because, as I said above, I’ve never been steered wrong by a Rare Beauty product.

What I particularly love is the finish. It’s matte, but not in that “I’ve put a layer of paint on my face” kind of way. When my skin is properly hydrated and primed beforehand, it stays beautifully matte without cracking or looking dry. It still looks like skin, just a much more needed polished version of it.

The coverage is another big win for me. It’s a lovely medium coverage that you can build, so I can keep it relatively light when I want to or add more where I need it. I’ve found that both a makeup brush and sponge give me a really flawless finish. Which is useful because sometimes a foundation only seems to work with one particular application method.

I also really appreciate how well it plays with the rest of my makeup. I’ve used it alongside products from other brands and haven’t had any issues with things separating, pilling or generally not getting along. It just slots into my existing routine.

Then there’s the shade range. With 48 shades, Rare Beauty has given you a huge amount of choice, and I particularly appreciate that the foundation doesn’t oxidise on me. There’s nothing worse than finding what looks like your perfect match in the bottle only for it to turn noticeably darker once you’ve applied it!

Honestly, I don’t have a con for this one. It’s become exactly what I want from a foundation: good coverage, a lovely matte finish, a great shade match and a formula that works with the rest of my makeup.

If you’ve been looking for a natural matte foundation that you can build up depending on how much coverage you want, I’d definitely recommend giving this one a try.

My Rating: ★★ (5/5 Stars)
