For this year’s Frights, Flicks & Streaming Picks, the recommendations for Halloween are getting smaller. It seems as though all the Halloween movies are disappearing before spooky season even begins! I may have to do a non-streaming version next year if this trend continues.

That said, I did manage to find some eerie gems worth watching. From spooky mysteries to chilling horrors and a few perfectly seasonal TV shows, here are my top recommendations to get you in the Halloween spirit this year.

Netflix

Midnight Mass:

If you’re not a fan of heavy horror but still love a good supernatural mystery, Midnight Mass is the perfect slow-burn alternative. The story follows a young man who returns to his isolated hometown on Crockett Island after serving four years in prison for a tragic drunk-driving incident. At the same time, a charismatic new priest arrives and begins to rekindle the town’s dwindling faith. But as strange miracles turn darker, the community is pulled into a chilling spiral of devotion and dread. Perfect for those who enjoy vampire films and TV series with a haunting religious cult twist.

Prom Queen

Set in 1988, Fear Street: Prom Queen follows the senior class of Shadyside High as they prepare for a night to remember, but not for the reasons they expect. When prom queen candidates start turning up dead, tensions rise among the students, and dark secrets from the town’s past begin to resurface. With rumours, rivalries, and revenge brewing beneath the glitter of prom night, this film delivers classic slasher chaos with a retro edge. Following the Fear Street trilogy, it’s perfect for fans of 80s-style horror, teen thrillers, and the signature Fear Street mix of mystery and mayhem.

Wednesday:

After being expelled for unleashing live piranhas on her school’s bullies, Wednesday Addams is sent by her parents, Gomez and Morticia, to their alma mater, Nevermore Academy. A school for outcasts and monsters hidden in the town of Jericho, Vermont. With her sharp wit, deadpan humour, and budding psychic abilities, Wednesday soon finds herself entangled in a dark mystery that haunts the academy’s halls. Not a Halloween or horror series per se, but a brilliant show for older kids and teens who want to get into the spooky season, blending mystery, humour, and gothic charm perfectly.

Paramount+

Buffy The Vampire Slayer:

A classic series that many return to around spooky season, Buffy the Vampire Slayer follows Buffy Summers, a seemingly ordinary teenager destined to battle the forces of darkness. Balancing high school life with fighting vampires, demons, and other supernatural threats, Buffy embraces her role as the Slayer with the help of her loyal friends and mentor. With its mix of wit, heart, and horror, this show defined a generation of supernatural storytelling. If you like vampires, this probably started your interest.

Pet Sematary:

Of course, we can’t do Halloween without a Stephen King adaptation. Pet Sematary follows Louis Creed and his family as they move to the small town of Ludlow, Maine. Only to discover a mysterious burial ground that brings the dead back to life, with horrifying consequences. What begins as a story of grief and love quickly descends into something deeply unsettling, exploring the lengths people will go to for those they’ve lost. Dark, emotional, and haunting, this film is perfect for anyone who loves their Halloween viewing with a chilling dose of classic King horror.

Terrifier:

Terrifier follows the nightmarish chaos caused by Art the Clown. A sadistic killer who preys on unsuspecting victims during Halloween night. What begins as a chance encounter quickly spirals into a gruesome and relentless massacre. This is the classic slasher movie formula, but it’s very heavy on the gore. Definitely not one for the faint-hearted. I highly recommend doing some research before watching. This wasn’t personally a film for me, but I know many horror fans who absolutely love it, which is why I wanted to include it in my recommendations.

Wrong Turn:

Wrong Turn follows a group of travellers who find themselves stranded deep in the forests of West Virginia, only to realise they’re being hunted by a family of cannibalistic mountain men. What begins as a simple road mishap quickly turns into a fight for survival filled with tension, gore, and relentless terror. It’s a gritty, fast-paced slasher that defined early 2000s horror for many of us. This was one of the first horror movies I watched with friends. And it’s one that still sticks with me every spooky season.

Orphan:

If creepy and the paranormal is your thing, Orphan delivers a chilling story that will get under your skin. When a couple adopts a seemingly sweet 9-year-old girl named Esther, their hopes of rebuilding their family quickly turn into a nightmare. As strange and violent incidents begin to unfold, they realise there’s far more to their new daughter than meets the eye. Throw a child into the mix, and you’ve got an eerie, unsettling film that leaves you shivering long after the credits roll.

The Worst Witch:

Specifically, you have the 90s version pictured above. It’s a great series for younger children that perfectly balances charm, mischief, and a touch of magic. The Worst Witch follows Mildred Hubble, a well-meaning but disaster-prone witch-in-training. Watching her life at Cackle’s Academy with her friends and foes. It’s a nostalgic, light-hearted series filled with spells gone wrong, quirky teachers, and heartwarming lessons about friendship and finding your place.
