Life In My 30's
  • A tall stack of assorted books is arranged in the shape of a Christmas tree, decorated with a string of warm fairy lights. A rustic burlap ribbon is tied around the top books, and a geometric gold candle holder sits at the very top like a tree topper. The books vary in size and colour, some hardback and some paperback, with visible spines and covers. The background shows blue patterned curtains and soft natural light coming through a nearby window, creating a cosy, festive atmosphere.

The books, from top to bottom, are Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, The God of the Woods by Liz Moore, and Once Upon a Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber. The tree’s lights create a soft, festive glow behind the books.

  • An open vintage book titled “Stories of Adventure” lies on a table beside old sheet music and scattered papers. A small seashell rests on the page, and another open book below shows the heading “Space Ship to the Moon” by E. C. Reichert. The warm, sepia-toned lighting gives the scene a nostalgic, story-filled atmosphere.

Today marks my 12th year recognising World IBD Day Today marks my 12th year recognising World IBD Day whilst living with IBD… but this year, I found myself asking a question I never thought I would.

Do I actually still have IBD?

After 3 surgeries, having everything from the ileum down removed and now living with a stoma, my Ulcerative Colitis is no longer active. There’s nowhere left for the disease to flare in the way it once did… so where does that leave me?

Am I someone who had IBD? Or am I still someone living with it?

In today’s blog post, I wanted to explore that question because IBD is so much more than just a bowel disease. Even without active disease, I still live with the effects it left behind.

A stoma gave me my quality of life back after years of immense pain and failed treatments, but it isn’t a cure. It’s a management route with its own ups and downs.

I’d love to know if anyone else with a stoma has ever questioned where they fit within the IBD community now 💜
