A Charming Visit To The Saxon Mill
The Saxon Mill is a charming country pub we decided to visit in Warwick, to celebrate my dad’s birthday. It was a lovely experience.
The Pub
As their name suggests, the pub used to be a water mill. The pubs building dates back to 1822 and the conversion into a restaurant and bar, to the 1950’s. They kept a lot of stunning original features. As you walk through, you can see one of the original water wheels, still turning.
I would say the only downside to having a grade listed building as a pub is the low ceilings. I expected it being tall and occasionally visiting heritage sites, but I think some may find accessing areas like the bathrooms harder, because of it.
The Food
You’ll find classic british country pub food on the menu, as well as some light bites for lunch. There was plenty of choice and I felt they cater well to all dietary requirements. I liked that our server asked about that, if we had any allergies or dietary requirements. I also liked that they were welcome to small modifications to orders.
For me, the mark of a good pub / restaurant is a decent beef burger. I ordered The Prime Cheeseburger and fries, but without the cheese, as I’m not the biggest fan of cheese on a burger. There was no problems with modifying that and I can honestly say, I haven’t had such a tasty burger in so long. I inhaled it! For dessert I went for their Ice Cream & Home Baked Triple Chocolate Cookie. It was delicious. I highly recommend what I had ordered and I cannot wait to try something else from their menu.
The Service
One of the main reasons I’ll be going back is because of our server. We were taken care of by Vicki, who was excellent. Bubbly, friendly, chatty, and someone who just made the whole experience.
The Location
The pub is in a stunning location. With the River Avon, Saxon Mill Fishery and Saxon Fields to walk around, I definitely would like to go back for lunch so I could explore the area more. It wasn’t until I was home that I realised how close to Warwick it was. It is only a few minutes’ drive to Warwick Castle!
A truly charming visit.
As always, thanks for reading…
