Tim Burton // Creator Edition

Last year, I started a new series for Halloween called Creator Edition, this year kicking off with a Tim Burton theme. The internet is full of many talented people and I wanted to amalgamate it for those looking for Halloween Costume and Makeup Ideas.

Christine Millar

Christine, also known as Sewstine, is a board-certified doctor by day who also loves historical costuming. Based in the US, Christine was one of the first content creators I came across when looking at period dress. I love how she includes popular culture in her projects and even includes costumes for her family.

Beetlejuice

Making this costume for her son, Christine shows how you can get striped fabric with black markers. I think it’s so funny that she bribed her child with sweets to get this costume together for them. You just know that child will be thanking her in their teen years for being such a cool mom! It is really easy to follow along and I did not expect the ending!

I think we forget about the comfort of our children when we buy mass produced costumes. Like Christine said, when she originally ordered striped fabric, she knew he child would be uncomfortable and wouldn’t wear it.

Katrina Van Tassel

One of Tim Burton’s most recognisable movie costume pieces. The Katrina Van Tassel dress has been made by a few different YouTube creators, but I love the dedication Christine took. She tested 7 different types of markers from many different brands.

Like with her other videos, it is easy to follow and I love her explanations throughout. For example, telling us why she used a dissolvable stabiliser for the interfacing on the lace. This is my favourite project by Christine and one I wish I had the talent to recreate.

Katrina Van Tassel (Short Version)

When I saw the project in a shorter dress version I actually squealed. As I said above, this is an iconic Tim Burton movie costume. Even in the short version, you know it’s Katrina Van Tassel. Although I shared the version above, for Halloween you don’t always want to go full out. This is a great alternative for a pub crawl, clubbing or even if you are experiencing a warmer Halloween. It also goes without saying, it’s more manageable to wear!

Madalyn Cline

Madalyn Cline is a professional makeup artist from the US. I came across her YouTube channel when I looked at ‘Alice in Wonderland’ inspired makeup looks. I love all the looks she created for the Tim Burton version of the movie. Madalyn really captured the characters and the Tim Burton style. Considering most characters have animated features to them, it’s very impressive. And perfect for this Tim Burton version of Creator Edition.

Cheshire Cat

I always had a soft spot for The Cheshire Cat. Probably because Sterling Holloway voiced him in the 1951 Disney Movie version. And he also voiced Winnie The Pooh. What caught me about this tutorial was when Madalyn really wanted the artist in the reference picture she had to be credited. I love creators supporting other creators.

This is such a simple and fun Halloween look. Perfect if you don’t want to go for a full, head to toe costume. Also, it only uses a few products which won’t break the bank! The attention to detail and the shadowing to emphasise the eyes. *Chefs Kiss*.

Queen Of Hearts

Helena Bonham Carter has had many Halloween-able costume roles. This is one I have seen many recreate in various degrees. In my opinion, it needs to be done with the costume and wig for the full effect. One thing I find so difficult to do, is get a smooth white base. Madalyn’s two-brush technique is one I will be trying! The tutorial is easy to follow and it looks so effective for using a few products.

On a different note, I would say this is a Halloween look for a day party, or to go trick or treating in. I think on a whole it would be very uncomfortable to wear out clubbing.

The Mad Hatter

The Mad Hatter, especially Johnny Depp’s version, is one of the most recreated Tim Burton looks I’ve come across.

What I love about Madalyn’s recreation is the simplicity. With a colourful eyeshadow palette, she managed to create so many of the characters’ facial features. The chiseled jaw line, the sunken cheeks and the elongated nose.

Out of all the Alice in Wonderland looks Madalyn has done, this is my favourite. I also really like when she explains why the products she uses work so well.It helps to keep in mind when recreating other makeup or Halloween looks.

Maria Elena

Maria Elena is someone I came across through TikTok. They’re a US based creator and so kick ass at makeup looks. It was their Dia De Los Muertos look that first grabbed my attention. When I saw their take on Tim Burton characters, I knew I had to include them in this year’s Creator Edition. 

Making Yourself A Tim Burton Character

There is a TikTok filter that’s becoming very popular. It turns you into a Tim Burton character and I’ve seen many creators do their makeup from that filter. When I came across Maria’s tutorial my jaw dropped. 

I really liked how Maria showed how to get a pale base without using thick body paint or cream. I also loved the use of glittery eyeshadow. Just because you are going as a dead character, doesn’t mean you can’t do it with glam. With the cost of living crisis, this is so easy to recreate and wear a black outfit with.  Great for those last minute situations! Also, in this tutorial especially, her voice was so soothing.

Miss Spider

I love this look. I think it would be one you’d have to explain when out at a Halloween party or at the local pubs get together. I feel so many people forget James and the Giant Peach was a Tim Burton-produced film. 

The subtle face shape with the blush is incredible. I honestly am in awe of this just being makeup. Maria has been great at showing us more cost-effective makeup looks. I think this has such an incredible effect for Halloween.

Sally

so I have to include a makeup look. This uses Snazaroo face paints, which can be really cheap to pick up and really easy to wash out. Dependent on the colour!

Sally is Tim Burton’s most famous female character. There is no denying that the internet is filled with many Sally-inspired looks. I particularly love this one because it has an almost cartoon effect to it. It’s bold, bright and easier to do than the more realistic ‘living dead’ route. Maria really hit the nail on the head here.

And that is the first post in this year’s Creator Edition, inspired by Tim Burton.
